Lamp: light leaves in every direction.
Light leaves in every direction
A lit lamp sends light out all around it. You see the lamp when some of that light enters your eye. The other rays are still there.
- Source: An energy-supplied lamp emits light.
- Travel: Light moves through empty space and can pass through transparent matter.
- Sensor: Light entering the eye reaches the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back.

Diagram labels: incoming ray, mirror, and reflected ray. At a mirror, the rays meet at equal angles and stay on the lamp side.
Reflect, absorb, or transmit
A mirror sends the beam off at the same angle it arrived. The beam stays on this side of the mirror. It does not pass through.

Luminous or illuminated
A luminous object makes its own light. An illuminated object is seen because it reflects light.

Air particles: each dot moves back and forth near its starting place. The sound travels as a vibration; the particles do not cross the room.
Sound is a vibration
Loudness is the size of the vibration. Pitch is how often the vibration repeats. The air particles wiggle in place. They do not travel across the room with the sound.
- Source: An energy-supplied object, such as a speaker, vibrates.
- Travel: That vibration travels through material such as air in all directions.
- Sensor: Sound reaching the ear makes the ear drum vibrate.
