Score a one-minute reading check on your phone

An elementary teacher's desk in late-afternoon light: a printed reading passage, a phone showing a plain teal timer ring, a sharpened pencil, and a small stack of index cards.

You already do this with a stopwatch, a photocopy and a pencil: the child reads for a minute, you mark what they miss, then you count the words and work out the percentage. This does the counting. Start the timer, tap each word the child misses, tap the last word they reached, and the words-correct-per-minute and accuracy appear straight away. It runs in the browser, it needs no account, and nothing you type leaves your device.

How it works

  1. Pick a passage Use one of two free Grade 2 passages, or paste the text your student will read. You can start without a purchase or an access code.
  2. Start the minute Sixty seconds, a big start button, and a Finished early button if the child reaches the end first. The word grid shows the same line breaks and the same running totals as the printed teacher copy.
  3. Tap what they miss One tap marks an error, a second tap clears it, and a long press marks a self-correction - which is not an error and never touches the score.
  4. Tap the last word That sets words attempted. WCPM and accuracy appear at once, with the error list. Save it under the child's initials, export the class as CSV, or print the class sheet.
