Compare a fraction to 1/2 or 1. Use the same whole to justify it.
Choose a model, compare, then explain.
Every view keeps the comparison goal and whole fixed. Learners may point, model, say, or write a reason; these are response choices, not different curriculum expectations.
The scale always runs from 0 to 2. The fraction and the benchmark sit at exact proportional positions on that shared line.
How does compare with ?
Teacher prompt: “Point to where the fraction belongs. What does the same whole tell you about its distance from the benchmark?”
Each outlined length is one whole. Partitions change, but the reference whole does not.
Teacher prompt: “Build the fraction across equal whole lengths. Where would the benchmark land on that same scale? Explain what you notice.”
“___ compared with ___ is ___ because, when the whole is the same, ___.”
A correct comparison is only one part of the work. The learner still needs a valid reason using the same whole.
Teacher prompt: “Use the line or the equal wholes to make a claim. Which feature of the model proves it?”
“___ compared with ___ is ___ because, when the whole is the same, ___.”
Ask for a reason; this studio does not judge whether a learner’s explanation is valid.
