See the evidence behind every comment before you write it
Log each observation, conversation and piece of student work by student and strand. The ledger shows where your evidence is enough, thin or missing, so you know whom to watch this week, and prints a class grid or a page per student when you sit down to write. Free, no login, and it stays in this browser on this device.

How it works
- Set up the class. Choose the six Ontario learning skills (Grades 1 to 8), the four Kindergarten strands, or name your own. Add students by initials or class number, and name the reporting window.
- Log evidence as it happens. One line per piece: who, which strand, observation, conversation or product, and the day. A Kindergarten note can carry its expectation code.
- Read the gaps, then write. Each square shows how many pieces you hold and which kinds. Print the class grid, or a page per student with every note, before you draft comments.
The ledger
The ledger runs in your browser when JavaScript is on. It holds up to 40 students, 12 strands and 6 reporting windows. Three ways to set it up:
- Ontario learning skills and work habits. Grades 1 to 8: the six learning skills and work habits on every Ontario report card. Strands: Responsibility, Organization, Independent Work, Collaboration, Initiative, Self-Regulation.
- Ontario Kindergarten (2026 curriculum). JK/SK: the four strands of the 2026 curriculum, with an optional expectation code on each note. Strands: Foundations of Language and Mathematics, Problem Solving and Innovating, Self-Regulation and Well-Being, Belonging and Contributing.
- Your own strands. Any grade, subject or province: name up to 12 strands, skills or outcomes yourself. Strands: Strand 1, Strand 2, Strand 3 (rename them).
Every note is one of three kinds:
- Observation: what you saw the student do.
- Conversation: what the student told or explained to you.
- Product: work the student made: a task, a test, a project.
Why three kinds, and when reports go home
- Three kinds of evidence. Growing Success, Ontario's assessment policy for Grades 1 to 12, says teachers gather evidence over time from three sources, observations, conversations and student products, because more than one source makes an evaluation more reliable. Each note in the ledger carries one of the three, so the grid shows which kind is missing.
- Grades 1 to 8 reporting windows. Elementary schools in Ontario send three reports: the fall progress report card (sent home from October 20 to November 20), the first provincial report card (from January 20 to February 20) and the second, in June. Boards set the exact dates.
- Kindergarten. A Kindergarten initial observations report goes home between late October and November. Two more Communication of Learning reports follow during the year, organized by the four strands.
- Learning skills and work habits. Every Ontario report card from Grade 1 to Grade 12, fall progress reports included, reports on six learning skills and work habits: responsibility, organization, independent work, collaboration, initiative and self-regulation.
How it runs
- Free. No login, no email, no sign-up.
- Runs on this page in any current browser, with a mouse, a touch screen or the keyboard.
- What you type is saved in this browser's storage on this device. The page has no account and no server copy, and it never sends your notes anywhere.
- Download a backup file to keep a copy or to move the ledger to another device, then restore it here.
Honest limits
- Local only has a cost: clearing this browser's data, using a private window, or switching browser or device loses the ledger unless you downloaded a backup. Download one at the end of each week.
- It is a working notebook, not a records system. Your board's rules on student information come first; if they say student information stays in board systems, keep it there. Use initials or class numbers rather than names, and keep backup files where you keep other student records.
- Anyone who uses this browser on this device can open the ledger. On a shared computer, clear it when you finish.
- Covered, thin and gap count pieces and kinds of evidence; they do not judge what the evidence shows. Whether it supports a comment, a learning skill rating or a grade is your professional judgment.
- It does not write report card comments, and it is not a report card template.
- Independent resource from Milestone Teachers, not a Ministry of Education or school board publication.
