Fraction Diagnostic & Repair Lab

Find a useful next teaching step from students’ fraction reasoning. Start with a 20-item screener across ten pathways, choose a matched micro-lesson, then re-check with a parallel probe. The Grades 4–6 package includes a student book, teacher guide and keys, ten micro-lessons, 30 four-task probes (120 tasks), Quick Check Forms A and B, and two Excel workbooks for tracking and grouping. There are 133 printable PDF pages across four PDFs, plus 47 editable teaching slides. Two HTML tools provide a student companion and three Fraction Repair Lab lessons: unit size, equivalence and addition. The lab also has a nine-page paper lesson pack, included in the PDF total. Choose pathways for student readiness; explanations and teacher judgment guide next steps, rather than a score alone. PDFs are printable, not fillable forms. Local HTML use depends on school browser policy. The selected pages below show one diagnose–teach–re-check sequence from the current v1.2 download.

Student Book page 3: two screener cases compare three-fourths of unequal rectangles and half of 200 mL versus 400 mL cups. Blank spaces ask students for a decision and evidence.
1. Diagnose: listen for how students identify the whole. These two unanswered screener cases ask whether equal fractions must mean equal physical amounts. Student Book, page 3.
Student Book page 14: Name the whole first. Unequal strips each show three-fourths. Compare two-thirds of 30-seat and 45-seat buses, then five-sixths of 12 cm and 18 cm strips.
2. Teach a matched lesson: use unequal paper strips, a guided comparison and a fresh check. Teacher language explains that equal fractions do not guarantee equal physical amounts when the wholes differ. Student Book, page 14.
Student Book page 24: Same whole, Probe A. Four unanswered tasks compare shaded lengths, completed question sets, container volumes and coloured banner areas, with space to explain.
3. Re-check: this four-task probe asks students to model, compare, repair a claim and transfer the idea. Use the explanation alongside the answer to choose the next teaching step. Student Book, page 24.
