How do I teach students to explain a math fact, not just recall it?

Short answer. Show the structure, ask students for the thinking, then try a fresh fact. Fact Strategy Studio is a short, free, visual routine with three strategies: make a ten to add, jump back to ten to subtract, and split an array into five rows plus extras to multiply. It does not diagnose learning from one response.

The three routes

  • Add through ten: make a ten, then add the rest.
  • Subtract through ten: jump back to ten.
  • Multiply with five rows: split an array into five rows plus extras.

How a round runs

Each route moves through a model (see the idea, then ask how they know), a rehearsal and fresh-check examples, with a projector mode for the whole class. The studio is designed for mathematical talk: students explain the strategy aloud, and a verbal explanation is not a timed score.

For independent practice and adult reference, the studio links two free PDFs: a pupil practice sheet and an adult key with a teacher guide. A no-JavaScript route lists the same three strategies so the routine can be run from the printed sheets.

When you also need a written fact check

Fact Strategy Studio explains facts; it does not measure them. If you want a written check, the Math Facts Diagnostic Grades 1-5 is a separate product: nine written 60-second probes for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and multi-digit operations, with answer keys, recording sheets and a class tracker. Match the probe to content you have already taught.

Honest limits

  • It does not diagnose learning from one response, and a verbal strategy explanation is not a timed score.
  • No accounts, no pupil data and no saved responses.
  • Repeated use of scored forms limits interpretation; the diagnostic's scoring bands are a local classroom planning convention, not test norms or placement cut scores.

Questions teachers ask

What is Fact Strategy Studio?

A free, no-sign-in visual routine for explaining addition, subtraction and multiplication facts. Each route has a model, a rehearsal and fresh-check examples.

Which grades is it for?

It is designed for Grades 1 to 5, across three routes: add through ten, subtract through ten and multiply with five rows.

Does it collect student data?

No. There are no accounts, no pupil data and no saved responses.

Is it a fluency test?

No. A verbal strategy explanation is not a timed score. For written fact probes, see the separate Math Facts Diagnostic Grades 1-5.
