Ontario Kindergarten Phonics Unit 2 | Short i CVC Words | Lessons + Decodables

A phonics series follow-on for Ontario Kindergarten, built for The Kindergarten Curriculum (2026). Five scripted lessons teach short i and the letters i, d, f, g, h and r in that order, plus two new heart words (I, to). Short a and short i words are mixed in every lesson, so children learn to listen for the middle sound. It assumes children know m, s, a, t, p, n and c and the heart words the, a and is; review cards for all of them and a 2 minute readiness check are included, so you do not need the short a unit. One 50-page PDF holds the five lessons (script, minutes, formative check, misconception moves, look-fors), three decodable books (The Pig, A Fin! and Hit the Tin!), standard practice including Listen and Circle and Sort the Words (a or i), supported and extension practice, and an end-of-unit check-in with a record sheet, a scoring guide and full answer keys. Every word a child reads uses only the letters taught so far or a taught heart word. Curriculum: Strand A, A2.1, A2.3, A2.4 and A2.5; A2.6 is introduced, not assessed. Limits: independent resource, not a Ministry of Education publication and not endorsed by the Ministry. Suggested timing, not tested with a class.
